You Can’t Have Waterproof Luxury Vinyl Flooring Without Proper Subfloor Preparation

The "Waterproof" Reality Check

When we talk about our luxury vinyl being waterproof, we are talking about the planks themselves. If you drop a glass of water on a plank of Canopy Comfort Premium, that plank isn't going to swell, buckle, or turn into a science project

However—and this is the part most big-box retailers gloss over—the seams are not a sealed vault.

Liquid is sneaky. If a spill sits on your floor for days, gravity eventually wins. That moisture can travel between the planks and reach the subfloor. Whether you have plywood or concrete under there, trapped moisture is the guest that never leaves and eventually causes a massive headache.

To keep your home healthy and your warranty happy, spills must be swept up ASAP. 

Our floors are designed to handle the "oops" moments of parenthood and pet ownership, but they aren't meant to be indoor swimming pools.

Why the WPC Core Matters to Your Subfloor

Our LVP features a WPC (Waterproof Polymer Composite) core.

  • Comfort is King: WPC is much thicker than the standard SPC you’ll find at home centers. This thickness provides a much-needed buffer.
  • The Forgiveness Factor: Because WPC is more substantial, it’s more comfortable underfoot and slightly more forgiving of subfloors that aren't perfectly level.
  • Thermal Insulation: It keeps your feet warmer, which is a nice "next-gen" perk for those chilly mornings.

The Role of Your Subfloor in Ensuring a Watertight Floor

If you skip the prep work and install your new planks over a subfloor that is uneven or holds high moisture levels, you are essentially creating a playground for future damage. 

Because liquids can sneaky-crawl through the seams if a spill isn't swept up ASAP, an unprepped subfloor—especially one with dips or cracks—allows that moisture to pool and sit in the "valleys" beneath your flooring. 

Over time, this trapped moisture against an unsealed or damp subfloor is a recipe for a massive headache, potentially leading to structural issues or a science project you never asked for. 

Taking the time to ensure your foundation is clean, flat, and moisture-tested isn't just about following the rules; it’s about making sure your "regret-free" floors stay that way for the long haul.

LVP Subfloor Preparation Like a Pro

To ensure your floor lives its longest, best life, here is how we prepare the "foundation."

1. The Clean & Flat Standard

Your subfloor needs to be clean, structurally sound, and flat—specifically, 3/16 inch within a 10-foot span. If you have imperfections, holes, or cracks, they should be filled and leveled with floor patch/leveler approved for the subfloor and flooring type and feathered smooth.

2. Concrete Subfloors & Moisture

Concrete may look solid, but it can still transmit moisture vapor.

  • The Vapor Barrier: A 6 mil poly vapor barrier is required for floating installations on concrete slabs.
  • The Testing: Moisture emissions testing should be performed and should not exceed 8 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. over 24 hours. Relative humidity should not exceed 90%.
  • New Slabs: New concrete must be dry, completely cured, and free from powder, flaking, or other contaminants before installation.

3. Wood Subfloors

For wood subfloor installations, do not install a vapor barrier directly over the wood subfloor.

If the home has a crawlspace with exposed dirt, the ground must be covered with a 6 mil poly or comparable visqueen vapor barrier to help control moisture rising from below.

4. Radiant Heating

Yes, you can have those warm toes! Canopy Comfort floors can be installed over radiant heating, but there are rules:

  • Floor temperature must not exceed 85°F.
  • Heating components must have at least a 1/2" separation from the flooring.
  • Warning: Electric heating mats that are not embedded into the subfloor are a no-go. Using them directly underneath our floors could void your warranty. Always go with an embedded system.
