Extending the Life of Your Luxury Vinyl Floors: Essential Maintenance Tips
Updated on: November 5, 2025
You picked a winner when you chose Canopy Floors—we're so glad you're here. We're founded by the Dossche Family, and trust us, flooring isn't just a business, it's pretty much a life-long passion.
We're carrying on a legacy of innovation, and we like to think we know a thing or two about making floors that can handle the real world. That's why our Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) features a wonderfully thick WPC (Waterproof Plastic Composite) core, designed to be the perfect foundation for raising a family—ready for all the chaos, love, and zoomies life throws at it.
We get it: spills happen, sticky messes appear out of nowhere, and "deep clean" is often just a hopeful thought. While your Canopy LVP is tough as nails, even the best floors need a little TLC to keep them looking their best. Think of the tips ahead as your easy, regret-free playbook for making sure your floors stay gorgeous, comfortable, and ready for whatever tomorrow brings.
The Golden Rules of Canopy Maintenance
The best defense is a great offense—and by offense, we mean a gentle approach to cleaning! Regular, simple maintenance prevents the biggest issues.

Rule #1: Immediate Spill Cleanup is Non-Negotiable
This is the most important rule for the longevity of any vinyl floor. While your Canopy LVP plank itself is 100% waterproof (thank you, WPC core!), it’s crucial to understand a key difference: the seams are not impervious to standing water over long periods.
- Immediate Action: Spills—especially liquids like juice, coffee, or pet accidents—must be swept up and wiped away as soon as possible. Do not let them sit for days.
- Subfloor Protection is Key: We designed our floors to protect your home, but remember: your subfloor is not waterproof. Allowing moisture to sit for too long and seep into the seams could eventually lead to issues with the subfloor underneath the planks. Prompt cleanup prevents this problem.
- Stain Smarts: Canopy LVP is incredibly stain-resistant, but they are not entirely stain-proof, especially against harsh chemicals or dyes. When a spill happens, a quick wipe is your best defense.
Rule #2: Sweep Gently, Skip the Beater Bar
Fine grit, dirt, and tiny pebbles are the number one enemies of any floor's finish. They act like tiny pieces of sandpaper every time you walk across them, slowly dulling the surface.
- Ditch the Abrasives: Use a soft-bristle broom, a microfiber dust mop, or a vacuum with a soft floor attachment. Never use a beater bar or rotating brush head, as the harsh bristles and impact can scratch the robust wear layer over time.
- Use Mats as Shields: Placing large, high-quality entry mats at every door is the easiest way to keep abrasive debris off your Canopy Floors. It’s simple, but it saves years of wear and tear.
The Deep Clean: What to Use (And What to Avoid)
Once a week, or as needed, your floor will benefit from a gentle wet clean. But throw away that old bucket of harsh chemicals—LVP and Canopy Flex are sensitive to them!
Cleaning Dos and Absolute Don'ts
|
DO |
DON'T |
Why? |
|
Use a pH-neutral cleaner. |
Use harsh chemicals (ammonia, bleach). |
These corrosive cleaners can damage the finish and leave a residue that attracts dirt. |
|
Use a damp mop. |
Drench the floor with water. |
Your mop should be damp, not dripping. Too much water can pool in the seams, compromising the subfloor over time. |
|
Use felt pads on furniture. |
Drag heavy furniture without protection. |
Protects the surface from scratches and prevents concentrated weight from potentially damaging the core. |
|
Wipe up spills ASAP. |
Let liquids or dyes sit on the surface. |
Protects the subfloor and prevents the possibility of staining, as Canopy LVP is stain-resistant but not stain-proof. |
|
Use a soft-bristle broom or soft vacuum head. |
Use a steam cleaner or steam mop. |
Concentrated steam heat can permanently damage the plank’s wear layer and core, which is never a regret-free scenario. |
Protecting the WPC Core
You chose our LVP because the thicker WPC core is more cushioned and warmer underfoot than the common, thin SPC cores. This superior comfort is worth protecting!
- Weight Distribution: While our floors are highly durable, distribute the weight of extremely heavy, stationary items (like appliances or heavy shelving) using large, protective mats to minimize the chance of long-term pressure denting.
- No Waxing Required: The wear layers on all Canopy Floors are designed to maintain their beautiful sheen for life without waxing, sealing, or polishing. Just keep them clean!
