Your Flooring Sample is the "First Date" with Your Future Home

You’ve scrolled through the galleries, you’ve pinned your favorite Modern Farmhouse or Scandinavian looks, and you’ve finally clicked that button to Order a Sample. This is an exciting moment! At Canopy, we know that receiving that small box in the mail is the first real step toward your home’s transformation.

But here’s the thing…a 9-inch plank or a single Canopy Flex tile is just a snapshot. To ensure you’re choosing a regret-free floor, you need to put that sample through its paces.

Floors created by a family for raising a family are designed to be lived on, so don't be afraid to get a little hands-on.

4 Essential Tips for Evaluating Your Canopy Samples

To help you move from "I like this" to "I love this," follow this checklist to see how our floors truly perform in your unique space.

The "24-Hour" Light Test

Color is a chameleon. A warm honey oak might look bright and sunny at noon but deeper and richer under your LED kitchen lights at 8:00 PM.

  • Move it Around: Place your sample in the brightest room and the darkest corner.
  • Vertical vs. Horizontal: Don't just hold it in your hand. Lay it flat on the floor where it will actually live.
  • The Wall Check: Hold it up against your baseboards and cabinets. Does the Toasted Oak or Midnight Walnut complement your paint undertones? (Remember: the new "New Age Farmhouse" thrives on these warm, medium-toned harmonies).

Feel the Texture (The EIR Difference)

At Canopy, we talk a lot about Embossed-in-Register (EIR) texture. This is your chance to feel it for yourself. Run your hand across the surface.

  • The Realism Test: Does the texture follow the grain of the wood? Does it feel like a flat print, or does it have the soul of natural timber?
  • Barefoot Approved: If you’re testing our WPC (Waterproof Polymer Composite) LVP, take your shoes off. Step on it. You’ll immediately notice the difference in warmth and "give" compared to a cold ceramic tile or a thin, rigid SPC plank.

The "Real Life" Durability Test

We call our products regret-free floors because they are built for the spills and splashes of your busiest rooms. Since this is just a sample, feel free to play "mad scientist."

  • The Sticky Test: Pour a little syrup or juice on it. Let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it away. Notice how the non-porous surface keeps the mess on top.
  • The Scratch Check: Take a coin or a key and give it a firm (but reasonable) swipe. Our high-quality wear layers are designed to stand up to pets and toys, and this is where you’ll see that resilience in action.

Check the Core

Turn the sample over and look at the "side profile." This is where you can spot the quality difference that retailers don't always mention.

  • The Thickness Factor: Compare our Comfort or Comfort Premium WPC lines to any other sample you might have. You’ll see that our core is thicker and contains more air pockets for cushioning.
  • The Integrated Grout Line: If you're looking at Canopy Flex, examine that beveled edge. This is the integrated grout line that saves you from a lifetime of scrubbing.

One Sample Won’t Cut it!

Because our wood-look LVP features high-definition visuals with natural variety, we always recommend ordering a few different colors or even two of the same color if you're torn between shades.

Seeing a larger "cut" of the floor helps you visualize the flow of the 7 inch to 9 inch wide planks across a whole room.
